W hat Is The Blue Mountain Provincial Forest?  The Blue Mountain Provincial Forest lies mostly within the District of Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada.  If you have been to Alouette Lake in Golden Ears Provincial Park and used the campgrounds or the day picnic area, you have seen the forest.  It's what you see on the east side of the lake.  The forest extends from 264th Street east into Mission district and from the northern point of Alouette Lake south to Dewdney Trunk Road.   View Map & Aerial Photo

The Blue Mountain Provincial forest is approximately 15 square miles or 4,000 hectares (it takes about 30 loaded logging trucks to provide one full-time forestry job for one year).  The forest is home to many species of animals and birds, from black bears to ruby-throated hummingbirds.  It is also where the headwaters of Kanaka Creek and its fish habitat are located.  Many other creeks and tributaries can be found here.  The Blue Mountain Forest is a very significant watershed and it has been declared a sensitive area.  Headwater logging will also affect Whonnock Lake.  Unfortunately, this beautiful wilderness forest is being threatened.

W ho Are We?  We are a group of concerned citizens who live in the area adjacent to the Blue Mountain Provincial Forest.  Our vision is to protect the ecosystem of the Blue Mountain Forest and preserve the rural lifestyle of the surrounding community.  We are extremely concerned about the use of questionable forestry practices such as clear-cutting, as well as inadequate environmental assessments performed on creeks and streams including Kanaka Creek.  We must stop the cutting of trees and road-building in this area.

H ow Can You Help?  We need a moratorium on any further activity in the Blue Mountain Provincial Forest until a full public consultation has taken place.  To date, we have acquired over 500 signatures and the petition list continues to grow.  We have an opportunity to set aside this area and preserve it as wilderness and recreational area for the people of Maple Ridge and all the surrounding communities.  We need more concerned citizens to get involved.

Please CONTACT your Municipal Councilors and your elected representatives in the Provincial Legislature.  Urge them to act now to support the moratorium on the Blue Mountain Provincial Forest.

If you have any questions/suggestions please don't hesitate to contact us either by phone or email: info@bluemountain.freeservers.com.  Thank you for your concern.
